Index of Peaks in Scree
The MCA Newsletter, Scree, has references to hundreds of peaks, mostly in Alaska. The first effort to index those references was done annually by Vin Hoeman and published as part of the newsletter beginning in 1960. Vin maintained a comprehensive catalogue of ascents done in Alaska until his death on Dhaulagiri in 1969. The index of peaks in Scree was resurrected in 1977 by Greg Higgins, as an annual addition to the newsletter. This continued until Greg left Alaska in 1983. Willy Hersman began a digital database of the index in 1984 and added first ascent information collected from Scree articles, the American Alpine Club Journal, other mountaineering publications and conversations with local climbers. This database was available on the club website from 1997 to 2008 when he was webmaster. Many contributions and corrections from members, most notably Steve Gruhn, have improved the first ascent information that has proven useful documentation to the Alaska climbing community.
