Scree Peak Index
Willy's Index of Peaks in Scree
The Peak Index is a database of peak references found in the MCA
newsletter, Scree, going back to 1958. There are 1327 peaks in the database.
References stored in this database are only those which:
- Mention or describe a climb of or an attempt to climb a peak.
- Make mention of the naming of a peak or an attempt to make the name official.
- Mention a peak as part of a slide program, where a climb was made or attempted.
Casual references are excluded, to make it more practical as a reference for climbers.
Peak names are sometimes supplemented with alternate names:
- In some cases there is an unofficial peak name used in articles, which later
was replaced with an official name by the Board of Geographic Names.
- In some cases the official name is not the more generally accepted
name used by the climbing community.
- In some cases a named benchmark is not the name of the peak.
- Alternate names are given if known.
In addition to the references, there is also stored first ascent information compiled
from past Screes, notes, registers, other publications, word-of-mouth, etc. Some are
still being researched. Notes on first ascent information:
- In the case where evidence was found that a peak was previously climbed, but it is
not likely that anything about the first ascent will ever be known, it is stored as
Unknown
- In the case where a peak is not difficult or isolated from access and though no
evidence has been found, it was likely climbed before being reported, it is stored
as Unknown.
- In the case where there may be some doubt as to a first ascent it is stored as FRA
(first recorded ascent).
- Peaks stored as Unclimbed have not been confirmed as such.
Mistakes, omissions, and inaccuracies, though hopefully minimal, are inevitable. If any
are found, please make them known by contacting me.
If you know of a first ascent that is
stored as Researching, please do the same.
To prevent the entire index from simply being downloaded at once, you will be limited
to viewing detailed information for 20 peaks per hit.
